Hemangioma: A Benign Tumor of Blood Vessels
A hemangioma is a benign tumor of blood vessels. Most hemangiomas are harmless although some can be associated with vital organs and be serious. Small hemangiomas can be removed with lasers but larger tumors must be surgically removed. This surgery can be difficult due to the large concentration of blood vessels. The 7 year old patient below presented to the office after several unsuccessful treatments by other doctors. I was concerned about the amount of lip tissue that might have required removal as the patient was a very cute child. I am happy to say that we were able to remove the tumor and reconstruct the lip with a successful result. As the patient grows we may perform further cosmetic treatment but she and her parents and my entire office were pleased with the result.
