Dr. Niamtu Receives Three Distinguished Surgery Awards for contributions to Cosmetic Surgery


On May 20, 2015 Dr. Niamtu was awarded the W. Harry Archer Award for his contributions in cosmetic facial surgery to his profession.

On December 7th, the Bellevue Hospital Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Alumni Program named Dr. Joe Niamtu of Richmond, Virginia the recipient of their 31st annual William F. Harrigan award.  This annual award is presented for major contributions in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in honor of Dr. William F. Harrigan, chief of post graduate training programs at Bellevue Hospital N.Y.C, 1950-1978. Dr. Gayle Miranda, president of and chair of the selection committee presented the award to Dr. Niamtu for his contributions in cosmetic facial surgery.

The Daniel M. Laskin Lectureship at the University of Illinois was established in 2009 by Dr. Michael Miloro, Professor and Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as a tribute to Dr. Laskin who is an alumnus and former Department Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The goal of the Lectureship is to attract internationally recognized speakers to the University of Illinois to share their knowledge and expertise in a particular area of Maxillofacial Surgery.  Shown above are University of Illinois Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty (from left to right) Drs. Dr. Niamtu was also awarded the Golden Scalpel award from the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery in 2014, which is annually awarded to 4 surgeons who exhibit “excellence, dedication, advancement and contribution to the field of cosmetic surgery”.

Dr. Niamtu wins award in Las Vegas for Facial Rejuvenation

Dr. Niamtu named “Best Surgeon To Take You Back 20 Years”

Dr. Niamtu had the honor of being named “Best Plastic Surgeon” in the 2010 Richmond Magazine readers poll. Dr. Niamtu is honored to head this list of Richmond’s best cosmetic docs and thanks the citizens of Richmond for their confidence.

Dr. Niamtu Wins Webster Award for Cosmetic Surgery

Dr. Joe Niamtu received The Webster Award at the 27th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery in Phoenix. The award is presented by the Cosmetic Surgery Foundation for dedication to public safety in cosmetic surgery through surgeon education along with research and outcome studies. AACS president Angelo Cuzalina, M.D. is shown presenting the award to Dr. Niamtu

Dr. Niamtu was the recipient of the “Presidents Award for the Outstanding Contribution of a Scientific Paper” for his paper “The Art & Science of Facial Fillers” at the 25th Annual Meeting and Scientific Session of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery on January 15-18th 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona.  This award is given to a single doctor annually, voted as the best scientific paper presented at the annual meeting.  Dr. Niamtu also received this award in 2005.


In March 2008 Dr. Niamtu and his wife April received the annual Ladybug Award from Greater Richmond ARC for their community service and advocacy for children with disabilities. Dr. Joe and April are spokespersons for the organization and have two special needs children.

In addition, Dr. Niamtu and his wife April won an award for their efforts as ARC spokespersons for the media.

On June 15, 2007 Dr. Niamtu was honored by Safe Harbor Women’s Shelter with their Beacon of Hope Award for his advocacy work for victims of domestic violence. He has been a community volunteer, advocate and fundraiser for the group and serves a spokesperson. Dr. Niamtu has also performed pro bono cosmetic surgery on domestic abuse victims.

They received an award for the television commercial that Dr. Niamtu made for the organization, featuring his family. The commercial was produced by Neathawk, Dubuque, and Packett, who were also honored with the award.

Dr. Niamtu received the President's Award from the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.Dr. Niamtu was honored at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery 21st Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. He received The President’s Award for Outstanding Contribution of a Scientific Paper.

Dr. Niamtu presented 2 scientific papers at the meeting. One presentation was on SMAS Options in Facelift Surgery and the other paper was on Pearls and Pitfalls of Clinical Photography and Imaging.

Dr. Niamtu has received an Award for Excellence in Cosmetic Surgery Education from the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
Doctor Niamtu is one of the original 12 doctors in the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery to receive the academy’s award for Excellence in Cosmetic Surgery Education. This award is given to those doctors who have taken more than 150 hours of voluntary, continuing medical education in a three year period. Dr. Niamtu’s commitment to continuing education provides him with the latest techniques in cosmetic surgery to benefit patient care.

Dr. Joe Niamtu, III received the “Best Lecture” award at the 19th International Congress of Laser Medicine conference on October 30, 2004 in Florence, Italy. The award is presented to the speaker whose topic and presentation is voted as best of the conference. Dr. Niamtu’s presentation included four scientific papers on the use of lasers in facelifts, eyelid surgery, wrinkles and scars.

In 2003, Dr. Joe Niamtu was honored with the “Best Scientific Paper Presented” at the annual combined meeting of the Australian College of Cosmetic Surgery and the Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australia in Brisbane, Australia. The award is presented to the speaker whose topic and presentation are voted best. The meeting included plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and cosmetic surgeons from around the world. Dr. Niamtu lectured on cosmetic facial surgery topics including facelift, Botox, ear reshaping, laser resurfacing and chemical peeling.

In January of 2002, Dr. Niamtu was elected to the Board of Directors of The Cosmetic Foundation for a 2 year term. This international group is dedicated to research and patient safety in cosmetic surgery.


In April of 1995 Dr. Niamtu received the prestigious Jefferson Community Service Award and was featured in the Richmond Times Dispatch for the many years that he has provided pro bono surgical procedures, to improve the quality of life of those less fortunate.

In June 2006, April Dr. Niamtu was honored as one of the Magnificent Moms of the Year by Style Magazine and Bon Secours Hospital. “This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize some of Richmond’s unheralded heroes,” said Mary Anne Graf, vice president of women’s services at Bon Secours Richmond Health System, in a news release.
