My Son Joey Turns 21
Joey Niamtu the IV was born 21 years ago today. I witnessed the miracle of birth and my thoughts were the all about having a hunting and fishing partner and maybe a junior surgeon. Things took a bad turn early and Joey was diagnosed with brain damage and cerebral palsy. In a very short time, all of my (our) dreams about having a son and namesake were dashed. While most parents spent time at ball games, school plays and graduations, we spent ours in hospitals and doctors offices. Joey has never said a word but he has taught me (us) volumes about life and unconditional love. For all he has been through, he is never without a full smile and is simply the sweetest kid ever. Summer is approaching and Joey will once again be in the pool where he can splash more than whale for the entire time.
I love you buddy!
