Botox 30th Anniversary at the New York Exchange

I was honored to be among the small group of doctors present for the ringing of the bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).  This amazing and iconic building it tucked away on Wall Street with very strict security.  Allergan, the makers of Botox Cosmetic and Botox Therapeutic celebrated 30 years of patient treatment and innovation on Monday., December 16.  I performed my first Botox Cosmetic injection in 1997 and at that time was one of the few docs in Virginia to offer the drug for cosmetic purposes.

Although Botox is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world, most people are surprised to learn that two thirds of the Botox produced goes for therapeutic usage.  This include FDA approval for Migraine Headache, Overactive Bladder, Strabismus, blepharospasm, upper limb spasticity in children with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, cervical dystonia, and underarm sweating to name a few.  The later hits close to home as my own special needs sons have received Botox Therapeutic injections for almost 15 years.  I was also touched by the announcement that Allergan will take a portion of the profits from Botox Cosmetic to assist the payment at numerous medical centers for Botox Therapeutic for patients unable to otherwise receive these treatments.

I want to extend a special thanks to my friends Drs. Jean and Alastair Carruthers who are the royalty of Botox.  Jean was one of the original investigators researching the produce in the late 1970’s and Alastair is credited with performing the first ever cosmetic injection of Botox.  They have been friends and heroes for the last 20 years and it was a pleasure to see them again in NYC.

My long time Allergan friend and  Vice President of Facial Aesthetics Rob Hubert and “Cramer” on the stock floor.

Although “Botox” is a permanent part of the contemporary lexicon, it truly is an amazing drug.  It allows patients to look better and feel better about themselves in one arena while it helps thousands with significant medical problems in other arenas.  Pretty unique for any drug ever introduced.
